The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Killed in action 4 Sep 1918. France & Flanders. The War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died both indicate that this man was born in Crook and enlisted at Stockton while living at Egglescliffe. He is on the Egglescliffe Memorial

Yarm1914 find that GT Wilkinson is commemorated on the Crook war memorial in the town centre. and the Hemlington Row war memorial one mile away. There is also a commemoration to GT Wilkinson on the Egglescliffe war memorial.

There is suggestion from Egglescliffe research that George Thomas is related to a signalman from Egglescliffe, George Wilkinson. However George and Alice Wilkinson had only 2 living sons in 1911, Percy Bolton a patient in Ilkley and John a solicitors clerk.
The military records indicate that George Thomas's next of kin is his wife Emily. It was not easy to find this document as he was registered under Wickinson, but the date of death and regimental number match the Yorkshire Regiment details.
Yarm1914 believe that Charles Thomas was born in 1879 in Crook, Co Durham. When he was 1 he lived with his father Christopher and grandparents Thomas and Frances Wilkinson in 20 Bridge Street, Hemlington Row. It is likely that his mother Elizabeth, nee Spoors, died the year after he was born. His father then married Mary Frances Harris from Maryport in Cumbria in 1884 and moved to Gray Street in Hemlington Row. In 1901 when he was 21 he lived with his grandmother and worked as a coke drawer. He moved to Yarm and married Emily Hanson in 1907 and his granmother moved in with Christopher, mary Frances and their daughter Mary Anna aged 15. George Thomas's wife Emily, born in Hutton Rudby, had been widowed in 1905 after only 6 years of marriage to Frank Hanson and had 4 children. In 1911 the extended family lived in a two roomed house in Swinburns Yard. George Thomas was a labourer and had to support Emily, his daughters Jane Elizabeth 2 and baby Rose Mary, stepdaughters Emily Hanson aged 10 and Margaret Harker Hanson aged 7 plus stepson George William Hanson aged 5.
Note: There is a George Thomas Wilkinson living in Stockton but he married Emma Louisa Watson in 1905 and therfore cannot be pte 19945 as he recorded Emily as the next of kin.
